José María Rossell was arrested in Lanzarote (Canary Island) as he stepped from an aircraft at the island’s airport. He had agreed to report to the police station himself on Friday in Málaga, but instead he was tracked down to Lanzarote the following day.

Those arrested as part of Operación Jable (a total of seven, including Sr. Rossell) are accused of forging public documents, abuse of public post for financial gain, money laundering and bribery.

Sr. Rossel owns Andalucía’s largest hotel chain, owning a total of 29 hotels all over Spain.

There would be some housing included and the whole area would be well landscaped with green areas.
However, this may be some way off reality at this stage as the project would make it necessary to modify the existing PGOU but it would certainly create many jobs and hopefully activate tourism in the area.

(NW) Well this month I had the pleasure of meeting Penny, one of the owners of La Tartana, who gave me a brief overview of the history of the attractive hotel, bar and restaurant. Clearly the place has had an interesting past!
Although only built in 1965 by David Grey and Antonio Cienfuego, La Tartana features the style of an Aristocratic Andaluz home of the 18th Century, with its beautiful central courtyard and fountain. Apparently, its dark wooden doors date back to the 17th century and I understand came from a convent. Its impressive wooden ceiling beams are antique.
Initially La Tartana was built as a hotel for the people of the Urbanización San Nicolás urbanization to stay in, as they were having their own houses built. Since then it has had a number of owners who have all added to its character. Penny told me that many of the locals are able to tell her interesting stories about the previous owners, parties and gatherings that occurred at the hotel. Clearly, over the years the bar has been a focal point for many of the residents of San Nicolas and La Herradura.
It has been a port of call for a number of famous people, such as Brigitte Bardot, the Prince of Saudi Arabia, and more recently Harvey Weinstein the American film producer and co-founder of Miramax Films.
The current owners Barry, Penny and Joachim, have had the place for nine years and worked extremely hard at renovating the building and establishing a great reputation for food, wine and accommodation. Penny tells me that the staff has a real international feel with employees from Argentina, Spain, Germany and of course the US. They host eight en-suite bedrooms and can cater for private parties, weddings and birthdays.
Situated at the foot of Urbanización San Nicolás, overlooking the 2-mile horseshoe bay of La Herradura and lush Mediterranean vegetation, I thought what a beautiful place to spend an evening.

The Regional Supreme Court has just rejected the Town Hall’s last possible appeal against a sentence that will force Hotel Bahía Tropical (Taramay) to carry out partial demolition.

The Regional Supreme Court has just rejected the Town Hall’s last possible appeal against a sentence that will force Hotel Bahía Tropical (Taramay) to carry out partial demolition. This 4-star hotel, known popularly as El Hotel de los Futbolistas, first opened its doors eight years ago on the 14th of July 2001.

In 2007 the TSJA (regional high court) annulled the building licences dating from the year 2000, which permitted the construction of six hotels in Almuñécar. The court sentence considers that the document was an ‘undercover’ modification of the standing PGOU. One of those six hotels, is the one in question.

The culprit behind these building permissions appears to be the now very controversial ‘modificaciones puntuales,’ of which over a hundred have been made. These modifications are, in effect, changes to a standing PGOU without resorting to drawing up a new one. These modifications should have been sent to the provincial administrations for approval, but they weren’t.

This time, however, the culprit was not the present mayor, Sr. Benavides, but a coalition council of the PSOE and PP, with Juan Luis González Montoro as mayor. However, all political parties voted in favour, including Sr. Benavides’ party.

Does this mean that demolition will begin immediately? Not a chance, because the Town Hall will probably try to appeal before the Tribunal Constitucional (which is a parallel court to the Supreme Court, one which deals with cases where somebody’s constitutional rights have been infringed.) Whether the TC accepts the appeal, is another matter, because as the SC pointed out, the TC has previously ruled that the ordinary courts – from municipal up to the SC, are the ones that should deal with these kind of legal affairs.

However, a possible appeal before the SC will not stay the sentence, which must be carried out before five years is up.

Although the exhibition started on September 5th, it will run to January 2010, so you’ve still got plenty of time to visit.
The exhibition has been titled Imaginacion y Colores and includes encaustic wax, water colour, acrylic and oil.
If you would like any further information on the exhibition or any of the paintings, contact either Lynne on 637 15 19 99 or Liz on 695 46 68 86.
