On the 1st December Restaurant Café Bar Sabina will have been around for a whole year!

On the 1st December Restaurant Café Bar Sabina will have been around for a whole year!
Although Sabina is closing for a well-earned rest from 16th November, she will be re-opening on 1st December and if you want to help her celebrate her first year pop in and join her in a glass of Sangria.
In only twelve short months, Sabina’s has become a very welcome addition to Almuñécar’s culinary crowd, and I am not surprised in the slightest that every time I look down towards this great venue near the old post office just off Paseo Puerta del Mar, from my balcony, the place is always doing well.
Congratulations on your first year Sabina, from all at The Seaside Gazette.
There is a good reason for this and that is Sabina offers top quality food at attractive prices.

Fresh fish is delivered daily and is extremely popular, you can even enjoy sea crab and lobster by order, although Sabina assures me that she will be doing the same thing as last year during the winter and getting a number of live lobsters in on Fridays, then using them over the weekend as required. So you can all look forward to a fresh lobster feast during those winter weekends.

Born in Sweden to German parents, Sabina has lived in Spain for 37 years and can speak several languages; many of those years have been in the restaurant trade, so she knows her audience and how to please a hungry local, expat or holidaymaker, serving breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Just one last thing… a subject close to my heart (and stomach), postres… Sabina’s postres are all homemade, and extremely tasty, not too sweet or sickly and all made with fresh produce, just the thing to round off a good meal.

Admit it… you’re tempted. Well, hold back no longer and get down to Sabina for a culinary treat.

To say that it is the end of an era would be an understatement, as we bid farewell to Kevin and Alix after nine successful years providing top food at the beautiful location know as the Mirador del Cerro Grodo, just outside La Herradura.

To say that it is the end of an era would be an understatement, as we bid farewell to Kevin and Alix after nine successful years providing top food at the beautiful location know as the Mirador del Cerro Gordo, just outside La Herradura.

It just won’t seem the same climbing that rock strewn hill on my motorbike, knowing that Alix wont be there with a beer, a friendly smile and a nice chat.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom… our loss is Nerja’s gain, as this brilliant team will be continuing to produce their culinary classics at El Avalon where is it is quite obvious they haven’t lost their love of stunning views. It seemed rude not to try a bite to eat whilst checking out El Avalon and I’m pleased to report that the same ultra high standard is evident at El Avalon as was at the Mirador, so if you live in the Nerja area and haven’t tried the place out, you are missing out on one of life’s great pleasures and if you have been a client of the Mirador in the past, you know just how good your next visit to Nerja could be.

Alix has asked me to thank everyone that has eaten at the Mirador, and of course the staff past and present who have made the last nine years some of the happiest of times. She tells me they will miss all their local friends, but will keep in touch… the feeling is that this move is a positive one for them and they are looking forward to putting a big Alix & Kevin mark on the Nerja area.

Alix & Kevin’s last day will be Sunday 25th September, lunch will be served, but there will be no evening opening. So get up there before the 25th!

Homemade desserts nicely rounds off your meal with delicacies such as Homemade Pâté on a Red Fruit base.

(NW) Jed, Mandy and the very popular Jonathan, from ‘El Ancla’ have joined forces and reopened La Tartana. The place has had a complete refurbishment, which gives it a fresher, lighter and brighter feel, as has the menu, which continues to offer superb quality food, complete with children’s menu at very competitive prices.
The team is introducing a Menu del Día and set lunch menu in the New Year, which can be enjoyed on one of the several terraces.
They are holding a Burn’s Night on Tuesday 25th January, with a 3-course, traditional menu. Anybody wishing to recite poetry from ‘The Burns Collection’ is most welcome to do so. Kilts and traditional costume are optional, but all the more fun for everyone. Don’t forget your sporran!
Alternatively why not treat your loved one to a special Valentines meal on 14th of February for 35 euros per person, or take advantage of their special offer for 120.00 euros per couple. This includes the Valentines meal, bed and continental breakfast. This offer is only available on Valentine’s night, but extra nights can be reserved upon request. There is limited availability, so reservations are essential.
There is now a newly asphalted road up to the restaurant that certainly makes accessibility easier and there are plans for a designated car park in the New Year. In the meantime, enquire about their shuttle service to and from La Herradura.
The open and friendly team is encouraging everyone to come for a drink and have a look around. Well worth a visit in my opinion!

(MO) José Antonio from La Yerba Buena told me they will be expanding their outdoor terrace this week to include seating as far out as to the blue parking zone. Perfect timing as the even hotter August weather is fast approaching.
I always enjoy coming here on Friday nights with my girlfriend for wine and tapas and to watch their live Flamenco Show. Believe me, the guitarist is absolutely amazing and he must love what he does because he never stops smiling. Of course, watching beautiful girls dance right before your very eyes is sure to put a smile on any man’s face. The show usually starts around 9:30 p.m., but get there early as the place fills up quickly.
Since taking over the restaurant in December, they have managed to attract a regular and steady clientele. This is no doubt because the food that Anne Maria (José’s wife) prepares is spectacular. Their fresh fish and grilled meat dishes have quite the reputation here – especially the variety of dishes they offer with Iberian pork. And if you love lamb, this place is a must! Their menu of the day changes daily and for 10 euros you can choose between three starters and three main courses. The price includes a drink, bread and desert.
Located on the corner of Avenida de Europa and Pablo Iglesias. Tel. 650 408 179.

One of the reasons I am thrilled to write for the Seaside Gazette is that I get to meet so many amazing people and to visit so many exciting places. This weekend I was introduced to Sunem Playa located on the picturesque Playa del Peñon in Salobreña. The owner, Pépe (who also owns Chiringuito La Bahía next door) gave me the grand tour. In one word “Wow!” It literally took my breath away.
This trés chic place, which is a combined restaurant – lounge – pub, opened its doors on June 22nd. It is totally classy and elegant yet in a very relaxing and casual way. The location is absolutely exquisite and the Italian designer décor is stunning. To be honest, I haven’t seen a place quite like it in this area. I was there during the day but the ambiance there at night must be indescribable.
The gastronomy leaves nothing to be desired either – with a fine selection of salads, starters, carpaccios, pastas and main entrees to choose from. There are three bars at Sunem Playa, one outside on the big terrace, the main bar inside and a separate bar exclusively for cocktails.
They host a variety of entertainment one night a week and have recently had live comedy, reggae night, and other live music to entertain their guests. The inside bar is spacious with plenty of room to dance if you are in the mood. A masseuse even sets up his massage chair on the weekends if you need a back or neck rub.
They take special care to use fresh fruits and vegetables of the season and this attention to detail fashions the menu, which is evident in the taste. They have specialities such as mushroom fricassee and shoulder of lamb, which are a delight to the palette. The wine menu is equally good if not better with a great selection of top quality French and Spanish wines.
