The photos belong to the descendents of Paul Sollmann (1886-1950) from Germany who took many photos in that year of Granada city and province, as well as other cities in Spain. This photographer and impressionist painter live in Granada until the 1920’s when he returned to his homeland. Whilst living in Granada, he married Granadina Angelina Macho Millet Martos.

The photos will be on display until September, so there is plenty of time, but don’t forget, of course.

A very exciting art project called ArteCalle has been developing over the past couple of months in La Herradura.

A very exciting art project called ArteCalle has been developing over the past couple of months in La Herradura. It is the first of its kind and the driving force behind it is Andrea Auer from Kuerbis & Kaviar Art Studio. The results will be visible in the streets and in many establishments of the town between July 1st and Sept. 30th.

ArteCalle came to life because Andrea had an idea and a desire to do something beautiful in (and for) the town. In her own words, the idea “was to bring the flair of art into the village.” The intent was not only to beautify the town for the summer, but also to create a cultural art event that involved both local artists and establishments. The aim was also to create exposure for local artists and to generate interest in their works of art.

It was easy to get the local community involved because the project is such a creative one. Not to mention the fact that is has all the right ingredients in order to become a successful one. The concept is to decorate the streets and establishments of La Herradura with original and colorful artwork.

Different artists in the area will have their sculptures, paintings, ceramics and other art objects featured in various locations throughout town during the summer. There are 25 establishments participating in the project, ranging from the hotel, to boutiques, to restaurants and real estate agents. Naturally, the Town Hall is also very supportive of the project and hopes it will become an annual event.

Starting in July, you will see streetlamps throughout town decorated with large banners. Each banner, measuring 50 x 140 cm, will show a particular piece of artwork, the name of the artist, and the name of the establishment where you can view the original piece. The establishment pays a fee to sponsor the banner during this three-month event.

A brochure will be available that includes an ‘art-walk’ map with a route to follow in order to see all the pieces being showcased. Also look at the ArteCalle posters hanging in the surrounding towns for a list of all participants.

What a great way to spend the day in La Herradura – it sounds almost like an exciting treasure hunt to me! All the works of art will be available for sale through Kuerbis & Kaviar Art Studio. For more information see www.kuerbis-kaviar.com or contact Andrea at tel. 671 696 743.

The works are described as bright, colourful abstract paintings, so if you want to brighten up one of those plain old white walls, why not have look, you might find just the right thing.

Antonio is 32 years old and is a true ‘born and bred’ son of Almuñécar. He came to study art quite late in life compared to most, undertaking a Bachelor of Arts in Motril then in college in Granada, although his love of the subject was with him from an early age.
His vibrant and exciting works will be on display at the Calmar Gallery in Almuñécar that is next to the aqueduct and the Chamber of Commerce in Almuñécar. The exhibition will be on until April 27th.
Antonio’s work is abstract, and in general quite large, with an interesting depth, created by thick applications to the canvas which draw the observer in towards the work, all combined with a clever use of colour, make this interesting artists work well worth a look. He claims influence from the likes of Kandinsky, Pollock, Rothko and Tapies, and every one of these artists can be detected somewhere in his intelligent works, but if I had to make a judgement on style… it would be somewhere between Wassily Kandinsky and Antonio Tapies, and that’s not a bad place to have your work placed.
Make sure you get along to look at Antonio’s work before April 27th.

If you walk up to the bridge from the fountain, running down the side of the embankment there is a lane to the left. Just a few metres down, there is a multi-coloured metal door – that’s where the gallery is. It’s pretty spacious and is well lit.
I went along to see Judith Reason, who was in the last days of her exhibition of watercolours. She told me that despite the economic ills that surround us, the exhibition went well and she sold quite a few works.
During this month, two local female artists will be taking over from Judith, mounting a joint exhibition, so it will be well worth a visit.
The two lasses concerned are Ana María Jimñenez and Mari Ángeles Raya, both of whom were students of Magar, who is a well-known artist herself as well as being a professor of Fine Art. The gallery will be open from the 6th of June through to the end of the month and view times are 19.30h to 22.30h.
