It was a pleasure visiting Wim and Carla Van Helden at their beautiful and inviting restaurant Rincón de Velilla just before Christmas. I was very impressed with their extensive menu and, browsing through it, it is no wonder that this restaurant has a reputation for excellent cuisine – and at incredibly reasonable prices!
Enjoy the menu of the day, consisting of three courses + drink for only 9 € (incl. IVA) and don’t forget Happy Hour every day from 19:00-20:00, when you can buy a drink and get one free!
All the food is freshly prepared by Italian chef, Alex and, believe me, looking at their tantalizing menu is enough you make you salivate. There is something for everyone such as Argentinean entrecote, Iberian lean pork, lamb shoulder, duck, paella, grilled pork or lamb chops, roasted spare-ribs, Italian pasta, risotto, grilled chicken breast and a vast selection of soups and salads.
The restaurant is open every day from 12:00-17:00 and 19:00-01:00. They are located at Paseo de Velilla, Edif. Inti Yan 6, Almuñecar. Tel. 958 631 387

There’s always the feeling that the party’s over once we get into January. Well, with that in mind, Mark at the brilliant Los Laureles has decided to make the first month of 2010 a bit more interesting, especially on those quiet evenings when you’re sitting at home and wondering what to do with yourself.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, you will be able to enjoy a three course meal, with a choice of three dishes for each course, all prepared to that superb Los Laureles standard, for just €15!
So don’t just sit there, using all that power and then having to do the washing up after your supper… Let Mark, Sandra and the team use their electric, look after you, and even do the washing up. A bargain like this doesn’t come around too often, and I can’t think of a better way of spending a chilly January evening.
Los Laureles, La Ribera Baja 14, Almuñécar. Tel 958 06 91 32 or 691 90 92 67. www.loslaureles.net

Opened in December 2003 to the delight of those living in the town, Esteban Arturo Giunti has created a restaurant with a great ambience, delicious food and sumptuous wines from Spain and Argentina. There are plenty of interesting starters, spaghetti dishes, salads, meats on the hot stone and meats cooked over a wood fire and the pricing is excellent. The wine list is well worth a look with wines from Spain but also with a special selection of Argentinian wines from the Mendoza and San Juan regions. Perhaps a Malbec grape or Syrah, Cabinet Sauvignon … or how about that Merlot? Why not pop into the bar and have a selection of freshly cooked tapas? The restaurant can be found at Calle Pablo Picaso Nº 6 in the centre of Motril and you should find plenty of street parking nearby. Over Christmas they will be closed on the evening of 24 December and Christmas day. Closed on Sunday evenings and Mondays. If you are thinking of a weekend visit then pre-book a table on 958 82 00 75 or mobile 635 888 773. Restaurant Asador El Quebracho Motril.

This corner cafeteria, tucked away down a street opposite the Supersol supermarket, offers something very different; oriental pastries, cakes and sweetmeats. For those of you who haven’t tried these delights from the Near and Middle East, as well as North Africa, you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that it is not as sickly sweet as their Spanish counterparts. And there is really excellent coffee to be had with your exotic pastries.
Abduallah, who came to Salobreña in 2008, judging the town to be a good midway point between Almuñécar and Motril, has travelled all over, spending many years in Switzerland in the hostelry trade, as well as Hong Kong, where he met his wife, Dibi.
His heart is in imaginative gastronomy and puts great importance on his ecological/vegetarian products. The good news is that Falafel does catering for parties, so you can offer something different to your guests. Not only that, he is adept at Arabic calligraphy, which is an amazing art form, as well as a silent conveyor of the spoken word. He would be happy to chat to anybody about his hobby, as well as giving classes to those who are interested. Finally, they open about 11.30 in the morning, a good time to catch them after your shopping.

Finally, moving on to Motril, we come to Yuan Wok. If you have never eaten at a Wok style Asian Restaurant, then you have truly missed out. Being a lover of Asian cuisine, this is one of my favourite concepts.
You choose from uncooked super fresh ingredients, take them to the guy at the wok, who will give you a choice of sauces… he then cooks the fresh food in front of you while you wait. It is delicious beyond belief!
There are also a bevvie of pre-cooked foods available as starters, as well as a sushi section and a dessert area.
Newly opened, and decorated in traditional Chinese style, this place is going to be a real hit both amongst locals and holidaymakers alike.
Great concept, great food and excellent service, so don’t miss out and give it a try!

Changing tack and heading to Salobreña we come to the Chiringuito La Bahía. For 21 years this fantastic Chiringuito has been feeding locals and holidaymakers alike. With superb fish and meat dishes including their famous Kebabs of Sardines, it is quite obvious that they have not taken their foot off the pedal in all that time.
They even have loads of private parking spaces, so you wont be driving around looking for a space in the heat and slowly starving in the process.
One thing that always annoys diners is waiting for ages to get your order taken… well that’s not going to be a problem here, with a dozen or so staff working in the kitchen and at the tables, your order drinks will be served and order taken in double quick time.
To find the fabulous Chringuito La Bahia just drive down to Salobreña beach, turn right, and there it is in front of you. Tel. 958 828 395.

Brilliant tapas and rations of delicious, freshly prepared Spanish food make this one of my favourite places to hang out. The girls are really good fun, and mock me mercilessly, which I have to admit, is fully deserved.
The food is really great, and even if you choose to eat and drink on their lovely cool terrace, make sure you poke your head inside to check out the décor, it really is good fun.
Open daily from 12.30 to 16.30, then 20.30 to 00.30, it really is worth stopping by here, as the tapas give you a chance to sample some Spanish dishes and at the same time opt for something more to a northern European pallet.
The witches can be found on Paseo Andrés Segovia (the beachfront), at Mapspot 7, and on tel. 667 570 679.
