A battalion of bulldozers have arrived and taken up residence next to the Alcampo supermarket. At last, after six years of negotiations between the Town Council and the Bolgaris Company, Motril is to get the new commercial and leisure complex it so rightly deserves and badly needs.
We are told that the total space will be somewhere in the region of 25,000 sq/m., comprising 8,500 sq/m. of commercial shopping areas and 6,300 sq/m. of green zones with bicycle tracks and pedestrian zones. There will be 1,500 parking places, a Lidl supermarket (maybe we should call this the ‘robbing zone’ as the thieves do seem to enjoy hanging out at the one in Salobreña), a Sprinter Sports outlet, Kiabi cothes, Merkal footwear and a BP petrol station. But wait, that’s not all, we are also going to get a five screen multi-cinema … woo hoo!, where’s me popcorn and sweeties with crackly paper wrappings then?
The project is to be completed some time in early 2011 at a total cost of 14,000,000 euros and Carlos Rojas, our Major, has been quick off the blocks to tell us that it will get 100 people off the unemployment register in the town and to thank Bolgaris for its conviction to invest in the town (Bolgaris no doubt know exactly what side its bread is buttered!).

The Mayor, at a recent Town Council Meeting made an announcement that work was to commence on the repairs to the auditorium of the Civic Centre in La Herradura. Of course, this immediately brought some criticisms from the socialists, who were annoyed that the work hadn’t been carried out before, and also that the carnival celebrations were not allowed to be held in the auditorium, despite the venue being booked in advance.
The recent rains caused a large area of the wooden flooring to rise up, rendering it useless and even dangerous, so Mr. Benavides explained that the event could not be held because of the damage caused by the rising water table. He also announced that approval had been received from the insurance company for the work to commence imminently.
The socialists complaint did appear somewhat justified as the damage didn’t seem to effect other scheduled events in the auditorium including cinema events at the weekends.
A pump was used to keep the water level down in the area under the auditorium until the water table receded.

Once again the Mayor turned up in La Herradura during February, this time it was for the inauguration of the new sports ground in the Las Maravillas area of the village.
The new centre boasts a full sized football pitch, handball court and two basketball courts, and has been enthusiastically received by local people.
The Mayor was joined by the Deputy Mayor of La Herradura, Maria Victoria Ruiz and the Councillor for Youth, Daniel Barbero and several others from the municipal government.
The event, which included a football tournament, was lucky enough to be held on one of the few sunny days during last month, and food was supplied in the form of a paella made by members of Club Deportivo La Herradura 05, who also organised the tournament.
The new facilities will be available to all who wish to practice sport, and will also be available to local education facilities.
The facilities cover a total of 165 m2 and include two multipurpose rooms which include pubic toilets. The centre had a total budget of 28,665.74 euros, and the building project was completed by Camacho Brothers Construction, and was included in the Transitional Employment Program (K.E.E.P.)

Their principal problem is that the same number of doctors and staff have to cater for the bloated summer, Christmas and Easter holiday period, even though the ‘staff needs’ are calculated on the normal year-round population.
For instance, as if the two doctors on duty at the emergency unit didn’t have enough on their hands, they are also called out to people’s homes, leaving this 24-hour service without any doctors present. Last summer the shortage became so acute that a new and ridiculous record was sent: 300 emergencies attended by just two doctors.

For two days, activities were organised in the Casa de la Cultura (Auditorium) to mark the occasion, such as talks on primary attention from the points of view of different medical departments. Just give Karen a ring at The La Herradura Riding Centre, and whether you’re a beginner or an experienced horse person, you can get yourself out and about in the most beautiful of countryside to be found in our area.
The happy and beautifully trained horses are a credit to Karen, who is a British-Horse-Society-qualified instructor and managed a very successful equestrian centre in Essex before moving to Spain in early 2000.
Even if you are a horse riding virgin, you really should give this a try, and give yourself the chance to see and appreciate the true beauty of the area.
Come on! Saddle up, and give Karen a ring to find out more, or even visit the website.

Juan José Ruiz Joya, the Councillor for La Herradura, has presented a motion at a Town-Hall meeting, proposing that the Department of the Environment at the Junta de Andalucía, set in motion the actions necessary “to set about building an Information Centre in playa de Cantarriján.”
Ruiz Joya also proposed that the department be made aware of the willingness of the Town Hall in Almuñécar to ‘coordinate and collaborate’ in any aspect considered to be opportune.
“The PP believe it is necessary to put into motion the building of a temporary Information Centre for summer and Semana Santa, for people to understand and learn the value of this protected area, the environment, local culture and spectacular views, all in on centre, where everyone with a similar regard can learn more,” he said.
“There would be available enough information about indigenous flora, regional history and the creation of walks and routes for walkers and ramblers as well as scientific groups and universities and all in conjunction the other visitors who just want to get onto the beach and enjoy the sun,” Sr. Joya continued.
The Councillor argued for this proposition because, after many protests on the part of bar owners and bathers, the Junta de Andalucía restricted access to Playa de Cantarriján. Ruiz Joya reminded that with the restricted access came a barrier to stop vehicular access to the beach.
“The PP believes that the Junta should invest in restricting access, they cannot ‘ease off’ when dealing with the ecological value of this area, to attract visitors with a variety of interests,” he concluded.
