Some lighter news now as we are please to let all you locals know that Bar Nuevo Camping is reopening on the 17th of March. The owner of the actual Nuevo Camping campsite, Manuel, has taken over the bar again after a period of time rented out, and he has started by completely refurbishing the place.
As I’m sure you are all aware, the bar is on the corner just down from the campsite, and after having a look around at the work nearing it’s completion, it is going well and on schedule for the opening. Very nice it’s going to look too!

I’m looking at a press photo of a man called Ivan, who has a face that you wouldn’t like to inform that you got his daughter pregnant. But this has nothing to do with daughters or pregnancies, but has everything to do with TV’s.
Ivan, who was born in Portugal but lives in Mecina Bombarón, has offered a 500-euro reward to the person who can give him information that will lead him to recovering his stolen property.
His notice that has been posted on the wall outside his bar, which has been burgled three times in only two months, says:
I won’t say anything, nor report it to the police. I only want what is mine at whatever price. Don’t be a coward; tell me.”
Ivan, who is bringing up his three grandchildren, is at his wits end: the first time they stole his TV, the second time they stole the replacement one and on their third ‘visit,’ they made off with an even bigger one, as well as drinks, his mobile phone – a total loss of around 4,000 euros.
Well, while Ivan is busy supplying televisions for the entire Alpujarra region, one thing has become clear – enough is enough… but he has bought another TV, mind you.
Well, if nobody comes forward to claim the 500-euro reward money, he could increase the luring figure by throwing in a couple of TV’s in, no?

Halloween was celebrated, as every year, at Las Brujas, and the evening was a complete success! Auxi and Anna told me that it was even busier than the previous year, and I was extremely disappointed not to have been there as I had a cracking time last year… but a broken headlight on my motorbike, and being stopped by the Police all contributed to a very disappointed Gazette chap, but that’s another story.
The girls very kindly sent me a couple of photos, so I can at least give you an idea of how spooky things were, and what fun it really must have been.

Once again crime became a talking point in the village, with reports of burglaries and attempted burglaries to several bars in the village, and even one or two empty properties in Carmenes have been broken into.
There was also a distraction offence at the Penña Parda end of the beach, where a vehicle was flagged down and the driver asked for directions, but on driving away the occupant realised that her handbag had been stolen off the front passenger seat. An accomplice had actually opened the passenger door and managed to remove it whilst she was being distracted.
This is not the first crime of this sort in the area recently, so please be aware and keep your eyes on your bags… with Christmas coming up you’re going to need all the money you have to afford to get that something special for your favourite Gazette reporter!

Changing tack and heading to Salobreña we come to the Chiringuito La Bahía. For 21 years this fantastic Chiringuito has been feeding locals and holidaymakers alike. With superb fish and meat dishes including their famous Kebabs of Sardines, it is quite obvious that they have not taken their foot off the pedal in all that time.
They even have loads of private parking spaces, so you wont be driving around looking for a space in the heat and slowly starving in the process.
One thing that always annoys diners is waiting for ages to get your order taken… well that’s not going to be a problem here, with a dozen or so staff working in the kitchen and at the tables, your order drinks will be served and order taken in double quick time.
To find the fabulous Chringuito La Bahia just drive down to Salobreña beach, turn right, and there it is in front of you. Tel. 958 828 395.

The name translates as ‘The Grill’ and that is pretty much what La Parrilla is all about. Ramón and his team produce superb dishes, from fresh produce, including red-meat dishes and selected fish specialties through to Spare Ribs and a selection of tapas.
Located on Paseo Andrés Segovia, it is very distinctive with its red and gold sign, and has, over the years, become extremely popular with both Spanish and foreign diners alike.
It has a large bar area where you can enjoy a beer or maybe even a glass of wine, which of course will be accompanied by a tasty tapa, and the dining area is cool and comfortable, with a large glass frontage so you can enjoy your meal while watching the world go by.
Find Ramón and La Parrilla at Mapspot 21 and it’s worth booking at this time of year on 958 640 619.

You’re assured of a warm welcome when you drop in at El Ancla (The Anchor), and at the same time you can enjoy a full English breakfast, snacks and full meals, it’s also worth checking out the blackboard outside for specials.
The family team of Katie, Jean, Cliff and Jonathan can be found on Paseo Andrés Segovia from 10.00am every day except Thursdays, and there you will find, from the creative hand of Jonathan, fish and chips worthy of a king!
I have actually heard people gasp as they see a fully prepared fish and chips pass by, that’s how good it looks, and believe me, it tastes even better. The secret, I am told, is in Jonathan’s batter… and it really is a secret, we’ve even tried violence, bribery and sexual favours, and he still wont tell!
Having tried just about every dish available in The Anchor, you can take it from me that Jonathan goes that extra mile to ensure that the food eaten there is of an exceptionally high standard.
Now get your hungry holidaymaker bottoms down to Paseo Andrés Segovia, Edif. Playasol, La Herradura, tel. 958 64 04 17. Did I mention Sky Sports and draught Guiness?

Brilliant tapas and rations of delicious, freshly prepared Spanish food make this one of my favourite places to hang out. The girls are really good fun, and mock me mercilessly, which I have to admit, is fully deserved.
The food is really great, and even if you choose to eat and drink on their lovely cool terrace, make sure you poke your head inside to check out the décor, it really is good fun.
Open daily from 12.30 to 16.30, then 20.30 to 00.30, it really is worth stopping by here, as the tapas give you a chance to sample some Spanish dishes and at the same time opt for something more to a northern European pallet.
The witches can be found on Paseo Andrés Segovia (the beachfront), at Mapspot 7, and on tel. 667 570 679.

If, like me, you enjoy finding a bit of shade during the summer, but still want to watch the world go by, do what I do and pay a visit to Café-Bar Pin-Ball, under the Paseo del Altillo in Almuñécar. With its huge terrace, with seaviews in both shade and sun.
The good news is that this isn’t just a place with a view… oh no! You can enjoy a breakfast with freshly squeezed orange juice and excellent coffee, or have a drink and sample the delicious tapas available and on display at the bar, and then if you’re tempted (which you will be), you can plumb for a ration of whatever takes your fancy.
On a personal level, I would have to say that the Russian Salad, is one of the best I have ever tasted. There are loads of other homemade treats to be had, and a large selection of ice creams to go with your meal or light snack.
Pin-Ball, the ideal ‘people-watching’ spot, can be found at Mapspot 29 on Bajos de Paseo de Altillo, Almuñécar. Tel. 958 63 00 11.
