Although Sabina is closing for a well-earned rest from 16th November, she will be re-opening on 1st December and if you want to help her celebrate her first year pop in and join her in a glass of Sangria.
In only twelve short months, Sabina’s has become a very welcome addition to Almuñécar’s culinary crowd, and I am not surprised in the slightest that every time I look down towards this great venue near the old post office just off Paseo Puerta del Mar, from my balcony, the place is always doing well.
Congratulations on your first year Sabina, from all at The Seaside Gazette.

Have you ever fancied trying somewhere different for your breakfast, or even a quick coffee? Well, me and the ex-Ed often partake of a breakfast or a quick coffee at Bizarro, mainly because it’s very central and the coffee is really very good!
Not only that, at the moment, our old friend and proprietor Oscar, is doing a deal on ice cream. Any flavour of ice cream, normal price for a litre is €13, but you can take away that litre for just €9.50!
So, you’ve had a nice breakfast, an excellent cup of coffee and you have your litre of ice cream ensconced in your bag, then you realise you need to put some more credit on your mobile… no problem, just tell Oscar and he’ll sort that as well! What a great little place.
There is a good reason for this and that is Sabina offers top quality food at attractive prices.

Fresh fish is delivered daily and is extremely popular, you can even enjoy sea crab and lobster by order, although Sabina assures me that she will be doing the same thing as last year during the winter and getting a number of live lobsters in on Fridays, then using them over the weekend as required. So you can all look forward to a fresh lobster feast during those winter weekends.

Born in Sweden to German parents, Sabina has lived in Spain for 37 years and can speak several languages; many of those years have been in the restaurant trade, so she knows her audience and how to please a hungry local, expat or holidaymaker, serving breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

Just one last thing… a subject close to my heart (and stomach), postres… Sabina’s postres are all homemade, and extremely tasty, not too sweet or sickly and all made with fresh produce, just the thing to round off a good meal.

Admit it… you’re tempted. Well, hold back no longer and get down to Sabina for a culinary treat.

You don’t mess with the barmaids in Malaga, if this incident is anything to go by: a waitress was arrested after stabbing a customer in the chest, who had refused to pay for his drinks.

It all started one Wednesday in June, at around half four in the morning in the Cruz de Humilladero area of the city. Two men had rolled in drunk; both in their 30’s. The bar at the time was almost empty, so this was the type of ‘arrival’ that bar owners just luuvvvvv.

They asked for two drinks, she supplied them and directly asked the two men to pay for them, which in nightclubs and discos is the norm, especially when they’re packed, although this was not the case in this instance.

They refused, so the waitress took their drinks away, telling them that she would return them when they paid, which was the point when one of the two men allegedly reacted aggressively. When a female friend of the waitress tried to intervene she was pushed violently away by the man.

The waitress then ran out from behind the bar to tackled the man, armed with a knife used for cutting lemons slices, one can suppose.

Well before you can say, “Is that a knife I see before me…,” he had the aforesaid 12cm-blade sticking out of his chest and somebody was calling the police…

(MO) I was at Mauro’s bar Califa in La Herradura enjoying his famous mojito (aka “maujito”) when I saw Sonia and Pepe, the lovely couple who own the popular café/bar/restaurant called Jeannot just down the street. I’ve noticed that Jeannot is always packed with people, so I asked them to tell me in their words what made their place so special. Their response was “The best part of our place is the clients!”

Of course, I know from personal experience, that their good old-fashioned homemade dishes are also another reason their place is so special. Their paella, stew and fried fish dishes are a must, as is their specialty boquerones abiertas. They also have fabulous salads made with organic vegetables from the local area.

If you are not in the mood to eat a big meal, they have an excellent selection of appetizers. In fact, they serve new appetizers every day, which is another reason people never tire of this place. Plus, you are guaranteed a great time with Sonia, Pepe and Raúl serving the wine, beer and tapas behind the bar. They are the reason the atmosphere there is relaxed, friendly and always fun.

Sonia told me Jeannot has existed since 1973, when her grandfather Aurelio started it. It was then passed down to her father Juan, and subsequently to the hard-working Sonia and Pepe. It is obvious that a restaurant, which has existed in a family for almost four decades, is doing everything right. It is recommended that you call to make reservations during the summer to ensure seating. Starting Sept. 15 they change to winter hours and are open every day, except Monday, from 11:00 -18:00.

(Ed) Pepe has the wickedest sense of humour and probably the best fish dishes and tapas in town. It’s also the town watering hole for most. Jeannot isn’t just a bar; it’s an institution. If you haven’t been to Jeannot, you haven’t been to La Herradura – it’s that simple

Some lighter news now as we are please to let all you locals know that Bar Nuevo Camping is reopening on the 17th of March. The owner of the actual Nuevo Camping campsite, Manuel, has taken over the bar again after a period of time rented out, and he has started by completely refurbishing the place.
As I’m sure you are all aware, the bar is on the corner just down from the campsite, and after having a look around at the work nearing it’s completion, it is going well and on schedule for the opening. Very nice it’s going to look too!

I’m looking at a press photo of a man called Ivan, who has a face that you wouldn’t like to inform that you got his daughter pregnant. But this has nothing to do with daughters or pregnancies, but has everything to do with TV’s.
Ivan, who was born in Portugal but lives in Mecina Bombarón, has offered a 500-euro reward to the person who can give him information that will lead him to recovering his stolen property.
His notice that has been posted on the wall outside his bar, which has been burgled three times in only two months, says:
I won’t say anything, nor report it to the police. I only want what is mine at whatever price. Don’t be a coward; tell me.”
Ivan, who is bringing up his three grandchildren, is at his wits end: the first time they stole his TV, the second time they stole the replacement one and on their third ‘visit,’ they made off with an even bigger one, as well as drinks, his mobile phone – a total loss of around 4,000 euros.
Well, while Ivan is busy supplying televisions for the entire Alpujarra region, one thing has become clear – enough is enough… but he has bought another TV, mind you.
Well, if nobody comes forward to claim the 500-euro reward money, he could increase the luring figure by throwing in a couple of TV’s in, no?

Halloween was celebrated, as every year, at Las Brujas, and the evening was a complete success! Auxi and Anna told me that it was even busier than the previous year, and I was extremely disappointed not to have been there as I had a cracking time last year… but a broken headlight on my motorbike, and being stopped by the Police all contributed to a very disappointed Gazette chap, but that’s another story.
The girls very kindly sent me a couple of photos, so I can at least give you an idea of how spooky things were, and what fun it really must have been.
