There is a little hidden gem located opposite the church in La Herradura. It is called Kürbis & Kaviar (kürbis is the German word for pumpkin). It is a combined art gallery and studio owned and run by two very creative and talented ladies, Andrea Auer and Rosario González.
Of course, this being a column written for and about wise women such as them, I was curious to learn more. When I stopped by, Andrea was working on her newest and very beautiful painting of a horse in full gallop. Andrea is originally from Salzburg, Austria, but like many other artists who live here, she was drawn to the beauty of the Costa Tropical and decided to make the move to La Herradura two years ago.
Before moving here, she owned and operated an art gallery in Austria, also called Kürbis & Kaviar. She has had a passion for painting for many years and has studied under various famous painters such as Bernhard Vogel and Gerhard Almbauer. Although she masters all painting techniques and mediums, her preferred choice is watercolour.
She told me she met her Spanish business partner, Rosario, while exhibiting her paintings at Felicia Hall, where Rosario worked at the time. When Felicia Hall closed its doors, these two talented ladies seized the opportunity and decided to partner together and open Kürbis & Kaviar. They celebrated their first anniversary on March 21st.
What makes this place so unique is that it is a combination of an art gallery – offering ongoing exhibitions of local and outside talent – as well as an art studio. If you are strolling about in La Herradura, I recommend that you stop by and admire the vast collection of paintings, ceramics and sculptures on display here – admission is free, of course.
They are open every day (except Sunday afternoon and Mondays) from 11:00 – 14:00 and from 17:00 – 20:00. The location is pristine, open and spacious with many art objects for the eye to behold. There is also a beautiful and serene garden at the back where some of the sculptures and ceramics are showcased as well.
More than likely, you will get of glimpse of Andrea working on her latest painting or Rosario giving a demonstration at the pottery wheel. If you stop by on Wednesdays or Fridays between 11:00 and 13:00, or on a Saturday afternoon, you will see art-in-action, seeing as these are the days when students come to be taught and inspired by Andrea and Rosario.
The two ladies have combined their respective talents – Andrea teaches painting classes and Rosaria teaches ceramics. In fact, there is a ceramics course during Easter week if anyone is interested. Andrea says that anyone, no matter what level, can join in their classes and workshops. Her philosophy is that anyone who wants to paint can learn. Painting is meant to be fun and joyous. Read more about them and this popular place at www.kuerbis-kaviar.com.

It is a truism to say that I have mentioned Carrington Builders in these pages on previous occasions, mainly because if you need any kind of building work done, large or small, they really are the people to get in touch with.
The “surprise” is not that well known about though… Bob and his trusty team may be able to sort out any project, from a new pool to a large conversion, but his wife Debbie can turn a simple wall into a work of art!
Debbie showed me some photos of her work, which are beautiful mosaic type images on tile. Not only a beautiful addition to any terrace, but what a lovely gift, a house warming present maybe?
If, like me, you like something original, interesting and above all decorative, give Carrington Builders a call on 958 635 368 or 618 778 851.

Yoga, WomenWorks, art exhibitions, Nordic Club news and more news for the Danish community and points of interests for our female readers

Local Danish Artist, Lilli Neigaard, will be showcasing her artwork at Café Rosa in Almuñécar from Sunday, Jan. 3rd until Sunday, Jan. 31st 2010 (both days included).

This creative and energetic lady was born in Ikast, Denmark and has been drawing and painting as long as she can remember. Over the years she had developed her talent and has exhibited her artwork throughout banks and town halls in Denmark.

She and her husband spend the winter months in Almuñécar and it didn’t take long for her to be discovered here either.

The Los Nórdicos association, which often stages exhibitions here, invited her to participate and, as a result, her work has been displayed at two exhibitions at the Casa de la Cultura. Café Rosa has also featured her paintings on their walls numerous times in the past. January doesn’t have to be such a gloomy month after all when we have her beautiful and colourful artwork to go and admire.

Another date to remember is Friday, Jan. 8th when the next WomenWorks networking meeting will take place at The Hotel Almijara in La Herradura. The main agenda for the meeting will be for members to discuss how they want WomenWorks to proceed in 2010.

I spoke with fellow Danish-blooded Glenne Ladegaard (one of the three founders) at the last meeting on Dec. 4th where we attended the Workshop on Happiness run by Dr. Gabriella Kortsch. Glenne told me that the WomenWorks community is growing and there are now over 85 members. They are really looking forward to seeing regular as well as new faces at the WomenWorks networking events whose purpose is ongoing sharing, learning, fun and laughter with brilliant like-minded women! You can join WomenWorks on their website www.WomenWorks.ning.com and keep yourself informed of upcoming meetings, events and workshops. WomenWorks is a place where bright, energetic women with a wide variety of hard-earned wisdom have joined forces to help each other succeed in their goals.

Speaking of goals, New Year’s resolutions come to mind. Getting healthy is on many people’s list. One of mine is to attend Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga once a week because it gives me a great sense of wellbeing. I want to share this information with you because not many people know that it is available here in Almuñécar.

It’s a form of yoga that all ages and levels, male or female can do. It is a combination of postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation. No flexibility is required! So if you are like me and want to kick-start the New Year by feeling fantastic, classes start Thurs. Jan. 7th at 10:00 am on the first floor of the Municipal swimming pool.

Last but not least, I want to wish everyone in the Danish community and all the Seaside Gazette readers a Happy New Year! If you want to contact me about future events or stories, my e-mail is danish@seasidegazette.es

On the subject of art also on show last month at the municipal library was the fabulous photography exhibition from the group ‘Salobreña Flickrs.’
Now for those of you not in the know Flickr is an online photo-sharing website, where anyone can upload photos for the world to see. Various groups and societies can be found in this artistic cyberland, one of which being the Salobreña Flickrs.
The group has over 40 members and was set up in 2008. Upon recognising the wealth of photographic talent in our unique little town the promoters of the group decided to take the art off the screen and onto the streets. Images from all over Salobreña were featured and unfortunately if you’re only just hearing about this now you’re too late as the show finished end of July. You can however check out the group online at www.flickr.com/groups/salobreaflickers.

(LP) Tucked away in a little corner of Motril’s town centre a delightful little gallery-come-art centre has recently opened its doors. Run by the fabulous and somewhat eccentric Virginia Ruiz Mansilla this creative little haven offers local artists the chance to exhibit their work and rub shoulders with other like-minded souls.
Virginia oozes enthusiasm and is constantly channelling her energy into promoting local artists and encouraging fresh new talent with various different classes and workshops.
When I popped in to take a little look at what was happening the place was brimming with paintings from large, colourful abstracts to much more classical, still-life oil paintings. Watch this space, as I’ll be interviewing the vibrant lady herself next month and finding out a little more about what’s on the artistic agenda. Meanwhile I highly recommend stopping by for a gander and to show some support for this beautiful little gallery.
