Lorry Park Suggested
The Partido Popular put forward a motion in the last plenary meeting of the Town Council, suggesting that the large space under the autovía bridge over the Río Verde should be utilized as a lorry-parking area. This plot was obtained by the Ministry of Public Works through compulsory purchase, both for the siting of the bridge, as well as a mini cement plant for the duration of the works.
Finding somewhere to park the growing fleet of lorries that ‘live’ in Almuñécar has been a constant problem – at the moment they either park alongside the main road near the P-4 junction or on the road that goes round behind the sports stadium. For this reason, the Secretary of the local branch of the PP, Juan José Ruiz Joya, pointed out that this spacious plot of public land could be the solution. Amazingly – for Almuñécar – the motion received unanimous support.
However, the point that nobody appears to have taken into consideration is that the road leading from Almuñécar, through San Sebastian and Torrecuevas, is precisely the road where you don’t want more lorry traffic. Anybody that frequently uses the Jete road knows that during harvest time the road is clogged with these long, lumbering articulated lorries, which are totally unsuitable for such a winding, narrow road. It remains an inexplicable mystery why the Town Hall permitted the fruit-clearing warehouses to be built along it and also allowed numerous blocks of flats to further narrow the road, making it impossible to widen the road at a future day.
So, unless they finally get round to building an alternative road along side the river, connecting with the N-340, without passing through Almuñécar, the idea of placing a lorry park under the bridge might not be such a good idea after all, no?
